I Wait For You

O Word of Life who breathed into dust
Pronounced me guilty and sentenced to death
Yet in love you promised to crush his head
On the cross your justice and mercy met
You drew with love and destroyed my pride
You quickened my spirit, now I am alive

And I worship you
As I wait for you
I enter your presence assured of your grace
Holding tight to your promise till I see your face

O Priest who embraced the unholy tree
Who owned my shame, drank my cup for me
Who parted the curtain with wounded hands
Anchored my wayward soul beyond the veil
You offered up yourself to die for the dead
Now I am alive and I lift my head

And I worship you
As I wait for you
I enter your presence assured of your grace
Holding tight to your promise till I see your face

O King who stepped down to set Adam free
To conquer his death that had condemned me
You bowed to wear my crown of thorns
My sin multiplied, your grace multiplied more
The grave gave way, handed over the keys
You raised me to life and gave me victory

And I worship you
As I wait for you
I enter your presence assured of your grace
Holding tight to your promise till I see your face

My Prophet, my Priest, my King forevermore
My soul was condemned, your flesh was torn
You offered your hands, mine held the nails
My cross demanded blood, yours was spilled
I ran, you pursued and claimed my life
By grace, what's yours has now become mine

And I worship you
As I wait for you
I enter your presence assured of your grace
Holding tight to your promise till I see your face

This poem was inspired by my time spent reading parts of Hebrews and other selected passages of scripture. The people of God in the Old Testament waited for Messiah. Jesus came to earth as God in flesh. He is the Prophet who finally and fully revealed God. He is the superior Priest who purified us. He is the King who finished the work of redemption and sat down at the right hand of God. For now, we wait for Him to return. Until then, we worship him and hold on to his promises.
